SAT | 2:00-3:00 Video Game Collecting on a Budget with John Hancock

John Hancock is a long-time video game collector, enthusiast, and historian - by which we mean he has entirely too many games that he never stops talking about. He has been a visible face for the retro gaming crowd for some years, mainly because he is usually hovering, vulture-like, over the rarest thing on a given vendors booth. We're reasonably sure he has some kind of psychic game radar. John is friendly, outgoing, and enthusiastically shares his love of gaming with everyone. He and his impressive game collection have been featured in several media interviews and articles over the years. John's game room can only be described as staggering. Despite having around 5,000 games and hundreds of consoles, he somehow manages to have a wife and son (who is already sorting his building blocks by color and rarity), and he works as a counselor with mental health patients.

There will also be one non-video game related trivia round for your friends who may not be the huge nerd you are! The question block is a great time for everyone.

SUN 10:00-11:00 Survival Horror with Ryan Payton

Ryan Payton is founder of Seattle-based Camouflaj, the studio behind the upcoming game RÉPUBLIQUE. He began his career in Tokyo as a producer on Konami's METAL GEAR SOLID 4, and was then recruited by Microsoft to return home to Seattle and direct HALO 4. After three years at Microsoft, Ryan surprised the industry by announcing his departure to establish his own independent game studio, Camouflaj. One year ago, Ryan and his team launched an ambitious Kickstarter campaign for RÉPUBLIQUE, seeking $500,000. Pitching the game as an iOS-focused, story-driven “stealth survival” game that combines the qualities of the original Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid games, Ryan and the team raised $555,000 through the popular crowdfunding site. Currently the 17-person team at Camouflaj is deep in development of RÉPUBLIQUE, using the Unity engine. The game is scheduled for a late summer 2013 release.

Over the last few years, I have really enjoyed the resurgence of arcades in general, and the barcade in particular. Watching Ground Kontrol grow and expand since re-opening in 2004 has been heartwarming, as so many video game stores rise and fall with surprising regularity. Living in Seattle, I’ve waited for our own homespun barcade to rise from the ashes of Wizards of The Coast, and I have not been disappointed.

Of course, locations like Gameworks and Shorty’s have been around for years, and have done an excellent job of being there for us arcade gamers that have fallen on hard times. But there is something special about the barcade, something that differentiates it from the bar-that-happens-to-have-an-arcade. It is the passion of the owner, the desire to put the arcade above all else. It’s walking into a place and seeing the grown up faces of the people you fought in Street Fighter II. The people who stuck their quarter up on the marquee next to yours, waiting for their turn. The people who light up when they find a Daytona USA game whose force feedback is tuned properly. The people who see me now for what I am, and welcome me as one of their own.

It was in this spirit that I began Seattle Retro Gaming’s World Map, the newest branch of our website. The World Map is a community effort to catalog and list any and all stores in the Puget Sound that is of interest to gamers. I’ve already gone through and populated most of the places I can think of off the top of my head, but I invite anyone to send in their favorite places that aren’t listed here. My hope is that by SRGE 2013 in July, the World Map is the best place to find details on your favorite gaming locations.

Please take a look at our World Map, and send your feedback to web@seattleretro.org.
